2008 Garden Seed Order

Today, my wife and I ordered seeds for our garden this year from Fedco. Fedco is a cooperative specializing in cold-hardy, sustainably-produced seeds, and preservation of heirloom varieties. Since we live in an apartment, we are constrained to growing in containers on our deck. This has its advantages and disadvantages, as detailed in the book McGee and Stuckey’s The Bountiful Container, and I fully intend to maximize our avalible growing space.  We tried to order a few varieties of each crop, so although this may look like a lot, we’ll save some seeds for next year.

Here’s our order:

297MP-Multicolored Pole Bean Mix (A=1/2oz) 1 x $1.00= $1.00
808DG-Dwarf Grey Sugar Snow Pea (A=2oz) 1 x $1.10= $1.10
882SU-Sugar Ann Snap Pea (A=2oz) 1 x $1.30= $1.30
1334MK-Marketmore 86 Slicing Cucumber (A=1/16oz) 1 x $0.80= $0.80
1372LM-Lemon Cucumber (A=1/16oz) 1 x $0.80= $0.80
2050NF-Nantes Fancy Carrot (A=1/8oz) 1 x $1.10= $1.10
2092NL-Nelson Carrot (A=1g) 1 x $1.20= $1.20
2214CB-Cherry Belle Radish (A=1/8oz) 1 x $0.60= $0.60
2224EE-Easter Egg Radish (A=1/8oz) 1 x $1.00= $1.00
2540LS-Long Standing Bloomsdale Spinach (A=1/4oz) 1 x $0.60= $0.60
2550TY-Tyee Spinach (A=1/4oz) 1 x $1.00= $1.00
2722SB-Salad Bowl Lettuce (A=2g) 1 x $0.60= $0.60
2740DO-Green Deer Tongue Lettuce OG (A=1g) 1 x $1.00= $1.00
2867PO-Plato II Lettuce OG (A=1g) 1 x $1.00= $1.00
4517RO-Caribe Cilantro OG (A=1g) 1 x $1.00= $1.00
5275KO-Kniolas Purple Morning Glory OG (A=0.25g) 1 x $2.20= $2.20

This will not be our entire garden, as we will buy transplants later.

Last year, my garden was a measly quartet of tomato plants.  I’m not sure of the exact varieties, but I believe there were two patio tomatoes, one cherry tomato, and one “health kick” tomato.  The health kick variety was supposed to have more lycopene, but had much less yield than the two patio tomatoes.  I’ve identified some mistakes I made last year, and hope not to repeat them this year.

  1. I watered my tomatoes twice each week, with a huge bucket of water.  This caused the tomato skins to split open, essentially ruining them.  I will instead water every day in less amounts.
  2. My tomato plants’ leaves turned yellow around August.  I only fertilized the plants once the entire year, so it’s likely this was caused by nutrient deficiency.
